Zhangye National Geopark Dan is known for an unusual natural treasure - colorful mountain formations of colored rocks of sandstone and conglomerates, mainly from the Cretaceous period. About a hundred million years ago, the mountains were replaced by a natural pool, which later dried up and its sediment oxidized, taking on an unusually beautiful motley colouring.
