Darvaza is a gas crater in Turkmenistan, which locals and travelers call the door to hell and the gate to hell for its very frightening appearance. In the 70s, geologists discovered a gas accumulation near the village of Darvaza and started drilling a well, but by chance the ground collapsed and a huge hole filled with gas was formed. To prevent people living nearby from being poisoned by harmful fumes, it was decided to set fire to the gas. Everyone thought the fire would go out in a couple of days. But since 1971, the fire continues to burn continuously day and night.
