In 1966, retired British major Roy Bates and his wife and son settled on a concrete platform built 11 kilometers from the British border during the Second world war. Bates named his platform "Sealand" and declared it an independent state. He proclaimed himself a monarch, also introduced postage stamps, developed passports, and even printed the Sealand dollar.
