In the X century, hermit monks of the Abbey of St. Zeno from Verona lived here, high in the mountains, in rock caves. In the XII century, there was already a monastery and a chapel of St. Maria di Mantebaldo. It could only be reached by dangerous narrow mountain trails. The Madonna della Corona Monastery was founded in 1522, when a statue of the Holy Madonna — Our Lady of Sorrows was miraculously brought from the island of Rhodes. So they saved the shrine from the Turkish army of Suleiman II, who captured Rhodes.
