🇨🇳China, Human Anthill (Maijishan Grottoes)
This is one of the largest Buddhist cave monasteries in China in the form of an anthill.
The beginning of monastic life and the construction of the first caves is attributed to the period of the Late Qin dynasty (384-417 AD).

The grottoes are carved on the southern slope of the mountain, at an altitude of 80 m from the foot. Inside there are more than 7200 clay and stone sculptures, over 1300 sq.m. frescoes that were created from the IV to the XIX century. Here you can trace the stages of the development of sculptural art in China. From one cave to another you can get only by a wooden path passing over the cliff.

In the uppermost cave known as the "cave of Heaven", a huge stone statue of Buddha with two attendants was hidden, apparently dating back to the era of the northern Zhou dynasty. It is not known where this statue was brought from, how it was raised to such a great height.
