🇷🇺Russia, Karelia, Kizhi Island
Kizhi has long been not just the name of an island in Lake Onega, but a synonym for the unique beauty that Russian architects were able to create from wood. The Transfiguration and Intercession Churches, sparkling under the northern sun— are a symbol of Kizhi and all Russian wooden architecture. Tourists from all over the world come to Karelia to see these monuments, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The area of the island is only 5 sq. km. The length of the territory is 5.5 km, but the width is only 1.4 km.
More than 89 monuments of wooden architecture were collected on such a tiny territory. In the park you can see ancient chapels, wooden churches, houses, mills, and many barns. The pearl of the complex is called the Transfiguration Church of 1714, whose height reaches 37 m. This church is crowned by 22 domes.
