🏘️Netherlands 🇳🇱, A village on the water of Losdrecht
🔶An amazing village on the water in the Dutch community of Weidemeren in the province of North Holland. Located southeast of Amsterdam.
🔶How did it happen that houses stand on small islands surrounded by water?
In the Middle Ages, this region was a large peat bog, too wet for agricultural purposes. Attempts were made to drain the swamp, but in the 17th century plans to use the swamps for agriculture were abandoned, and peat was extracted from the swamp instead.
🔶Peat extraction in Losdrecht began in the 1630s. Peat was extracted from the water and left to dry on the shore. This resulted in an area with long trenches and banks. As peat extraction continued, the land became smaller and smaller, which was destroyed by waves and wind. As a result of peat extraction, the trenches became deeper until they were flooded by groundwater, creating these narrow islands.
