⛪Portugal 🇵🇹, Hieronymite Monastery

🔶Hieronymite Monastery on the outskirts of Lisbon Belen, Geronimos (port. Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) is a grandiose monument of the late Gothic Manueline style of Portuguese architecture. It is protected by UNESCO as a monument of the World Heritage of Mankind. The monastery buildings are located in the Lisbon suburb of Santa Maria de Belen (Bethlehem).

🔶Founded by Henry the Navigator in 1450, the monastery is inextricably linked with the history of Great Geographical Discoveries. It was here that Vasco da Gama and his companions spent the night in prayer before sailing to India. The construction was carried out with the money earned from the resale of Indian spices from 1502 to 1520 and from 1550 to 1580, and then it was resumed in the XIX century.

🔶About 1 million people visit the monastery every year. Thus, the Jeronimos Monastery is the most popular attraction in Portugal.
