Italy 🇮🇹, Padua, Piazza Prato della Valle
🔶Piazza Prato della Valle is the largest square in Italy and one of the first largest in Europe. It is located in the city of Padova to the south of the historical center and occupies an area of 88,620 m2.
🔶Its romantic name, which means "meadow in the valley", already suggests that this is not an ordinary square. Piazza Prato della Valle has its own interesting history and incredibly picturesque architectural ensemble.
🔶During the Roman Empire, the area of Prato della Valle was known as Campo Marzio or the Field of Mars, because it was a place for military meetings.
🔶The main mission of reorganizing the old square fell to the lot of Andrea Memmo, a politician and writer who served as administrator of Padua in 1775-1776. His passion for art and architecture allowed him to carry out a huge job of turning a large earthen glade into a monumental square.
