The Rijksmuseum is the main state museum of Amsterdam, one of the most famous art museums in the world, is among the top 20 most visited museums in the world. The museum is located on the Museumplein, next to the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art.
The building of the Rijksmuseum was opened to the public in 1885. About 2 million people visit the Rijksmuseum every year.
The Rijksmuseum collection illustrates the history of Holland from the Middle Ages to the present. In total, the museum's collection contains about 1 million pieces of art from 1200 to 2000. There are about 8000 exhibits on the 4 floors of the museum, in 80 halls.
The works in the Rijksmuseum are numerous works by Dutch masters of the XV—XIX centuries, the main of which are Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals.
In addition to the art collection of paintings, the museum presents sculptures, archaeological finds, ancient artifacts, decorative and applied art, drawings, engravings and photographs.
