Côte d'Ivoire 🇨🇮, Notre-Dame de la Paix Cathedral

Surprisingly, the largest church in the world is not located in Europe or America.

Notre-Dame de la Paix Cathedral is a Catholic church in Yamoussoukro, the capital of Ivory Coast, listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest church in the world. The basilica was built in 1989 on the model of St. Peter's Cathedral. Interestingly, although Notre Dame de la Paix surpasses its Vatican counterpart in area – 30,000 m2, as well as the height of the dome – 158 m, it accommodates 18,000 people, and St. Peter's Cathedral – 60,000 people.

The consecration of the church on September 10, 1990 was performed by Pontiff John Paul II. In the same year, on October 30, the cathedral was awarded the honorary status of a minor basilica. In addition to the records, Notre Dame de la Paix is unique in that it is located in Ivory Coast, where only 20% of the population professes Christianity.
