The majestic decoration of the Vienna Karlskirche

The Church of St. Karl Borromey — Karlskirche is one of the most striking creations of Johann Fischer von Erlach, the master of the Habsburg Baroque. The reason for the construction of this church was the plague epidemic in Vienna, which devastated the city in 1713. Then Charles VI made a vow to the Lord: after getting rid of the scourge to build a grandiose temple (canonized Cardinal Carlo Borromeo during the plague in Milan helped the sick, buried the dead).

Construction lasted from 1716 to 1737 . After his father's death, the work was completed by the architect's son, Josef Fischer von Erlach. The appearance of the temple turned out to be eclectic: in addition to the Italian Baroque style, elements of ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic architecture were used in it.
