The city is located on the edge of the ice field of Southern Patagonia. In the language of the local Tehuelche Indians, the name Chalten means "smoky mountain", since its peak is almost always hidden by clouds. 2

There are dozens of hiking trails in the vicinity of El Chalten. It is one of the most beautiful places in Patagonia, but also one of the most expensive and congested in the summer season.
