Italy 🇮🇹
Ortigia (Italian: Ortigia, Sic: Ortìggia) is an island of the Ionian Sea in a bay off the eastern coast of Sicily.
In ancient times, the city-state of Syracuse, one of the largest and richest on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, stood on the island. Since the end of the 19th century, the modern city of Syracuse has been connected to the island by two bridges.
The toponym can be translated from Greek as “Quail Island”. The name was given by the ancient Greeks due to the presence of quails and other small birds.
