Athens Acropolis — a symbol of ancient Greek civilization and one of the most recognizable places in the world!

The first settlements on the rock date back to the Mycenaean era (1600–1100 BC). However, the grand temples that have survived to this day were built in the 5th century BC during the reign of Pericles.

The Acropolis was a sacred place dedicated to Athena, the patron goddess of the city. Religious ceremonies took place here, and the treasures of ancient Greece were kept.

Fun fact: The Parthenon, the most famous temple on the Acropolis, was originally painted in vibrant colors, not the white marble we see today!
