Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine.

Russia unleashed further destruction on Kharkiv and Mariupol, major cities in eastern Ukraine that are crucial to Moscow’s apparent goal of controlling a large arc of its neighbor after its effort to take the capital was blocked.

In Kharkiv, Russian forces fired on civilian areas for the second day.

The wounded in Kharkiv included four people working for chef José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen, which provides meals for people in crisis zones.

In Mariupol, Russia intensified its bombing of a vast steel works where a group of Ukrainian fighters remain holed up after rejecting Russian demands to surrender on Sunday.

“The city still has not fallen,” Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine’s prime minister, told ABC News on Sunday. Soldiers there will fight to “the end,” he said.

The fate of Mariupol remained unclear and largely dependent on how long the remaining Ukrainian forces could hold out in underground tunnels of the Azovstal steel plant.
