Ukraine’s profane stamp that has become a symbol of resistance sells out.

Ukrainians waited for hours outside post offices this week to buy stamps with a profane image of defiance that has become a symbol of the country’s resistance. On Wednesday, they found out that the now iconic stamps had sold out.

The postal service printed a run of one million stamps with the image of a Ukrainian special forces fighter raising his middle finger at a Russian warship. The image related to an incident early in the conflict, when a warship demanded the surrender of a small group of fighters guarding a rocky island in the Black Sea.

The day after the stamps were released for sale on April 12, Russia’s flagship in the Black Sea, the Moskva, was hit by Ukrainian missiles, according to Ukrainian and U.S. officials. The Russian government said an accidental fire caused ammunition explosions. Each side said the Moskva then sank. Read more
