A Ukrainian governor said that more than 100 civilians remain trapped at the besieged Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol even after a series of missions by humanitarian workers to bring civilians to safety.
“There are definitely more than a hundred civilians left in Azovstal,” said Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of Donetsk, in a video interview posted to Telegram on Monday. “Air bombardments and artillery shelling take place there almost constantly.”
Ukrainian and Russian officials had previously announced that all women, children and elderly people, who for weeks had been living underground at the plant because of Russian bombardment, had been evacuated.
The remaining civilians had not deterred Russian forces from maintaining “the density of their attacks,” Petro Andriushchenko, an adviser to the city government, said in a Telegram post. Read more
