Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine.

Russia appears to be shifting its immediate ambitions on the eastern front of its invasion of Ukraine, as battlefield setbacks and dwindling troop numbers drain its war effort.

Instead of attempting to encircle large numbers of Ukrainian troops from Izyum south to Donetsk City, Russia is likely now trying to complete a takeover of the Luhansk area in the south, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

It cited comments from Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Luhansk, who said that the Russian military appears to recognize that it does not have the capacity to seize the Donetsk region to the south but feels capable of taking all of Luhansk.

The shift comes as Russia faces severe battlefield setbacks even as it slowly extends control over the east of Ukraine. Russia may have lost a third of the ground forces it committed to the war in Ukraine, British intelligence officials said on Sunday.
