Ukraine was facing significant military pressure on Saturday, with Ukrainian and Russian forces fighting street to street in a battle for Sievierodonetsk, one of the most important cities in the Donbas region still held by Ukraine. A Pentagon spokesman, describing how the war is evolving in its fourth month, said it had become, in places, “a very close and intimate fight.”
Early in the war, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia failed in his attempt to break Ukraine by seizing its capital, Kyiv. That setback shifted his focus to concentrate for fighting over control of the Donbas, which borders Russian territory and where Russian forces have been active since 2014.
Mr. Putin’s military campaign has intensified despite the collected array of Western sanctions on Moscow, a level of diplomatic support for the government in Kyiv that is almost without precedent, and promises from Washington and Europe of more substantial military aid. Read more
