I.C.C. prosecutor visits Kharkiv as war crimes investigations continue.
The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court visited Kharkiv on Tuesday as its investigations and Ukraine’s prosecutions of Russian war crimes continue.
A day before the visit by the I.C.C. prosecutor, Karim Khan, an Amnesty International report concluded that Russia’s use of cluster munitions on Kharkiv had killed hundreds of civilians. The report said that the indiscriminate nature of Russian attacks on Kharkiv constituted war crimes.
A string of reports from human rights groups has found that Russia has violated international law in Ukraine.
Ukraine has begun carrying out its own prosecutions of Russian war crimes. Thousands of cases have been opened, and there have been eight indictments and three sentences, Ukraine’s prosecutor general said last week.
But the I.C.C. represents the best opportunity to hold Russia accountable on a global stage, international legal experts said. Read more
