Three European leaders travel to Ukraine as questions mount over the allies’ strategy.

The leaders of France, Germany and Italy traveled to Ukraine on Thursday and will meet with the President Volodymyr Zelensky for the first time since Russia’s invasion began in February.

The visit comes as questions mount over European support for Ukraine and as Mr. Zelensky calls for heavier weapons to offset Moscow’s artillery advantage.

President Emmanuel Macron of France, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany and Prime Minister Mario Draghi of Italy follow a host of European leaders who have traveled overland to Kyiv.

“It is an important moment,” Mr. Macron told reporters on a Kyiv station platform.

The war has raised questions for the E.U. as it debates how best to support a nation facing the biggest invasion on the continent since World War II.

Later this month, E.U. countries will also decide whether to grant Ukraine candidate status in the country’s prolonged quest to join the bloc. Read more
