After arriving in Ukraine on Thursday, the European leaders visited Irpin, a Kyiv suburb where investigators are looking into reports of Russian atrocities during the war.
Guided by a Ukrainian official, the leaders — President Emmanuel Macron of France, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany and Prime Minister Mario Draghi of Italy, along with President Klaus Iohannis of Romania — were shown a video and exhibition of the destruction left by Russian forces.
Pointing to graffiti that said, “Make Europe, not war,” Mr. Macron said, “This is the right message,” and added, “It’s very moving to see that.”
He said it was important for the European leaders to show “political support” for Ukraine. “That’s what we wanted to do by coming here, the four of us, to both see for ourselves, show our respect and our admiration for the courage of the Ukrainian people, and to have discussions with President Zelensky,” Mr. Macron said.
