Rare Botticelli painting sells for US$45m at New York auction
Works by Sandro Botticelli in private collections are much rarer because the majority are displayed in galleries.
After a 7-minute bidding battle among 3 buyers via phone, the painting The Man of Sorrows sold for US$39.3 million, plus fees and commissions, for a total of US$45.4 million. This was above Sotheby’s estimate of US$40 million, and more than half the record set in 2021 for the Botticelli painting Young Man Holding a Roundel, which sold for US$92.2 million.
