🏆 Winner of Japan’s Top Literary Prize Admits She Used ChatGPT

33-year-old author Rie Kudan used artificial intelligence to write her sci-fi novel Tokyo-to Dojo-to (Tokyo Sympathy Tower). She was awarded the Akutagawa Prize for this book. Established in 1935, the prize is one of the most prestigious literary awards in Japan for debut works. Judges reportedly called Kudan’s novel “almost flawless.”

“This is a novel written by making full use of a generative AI like ChatGPT, and probably about 5 percent of the whole text is written directly from the generative AI,” Kudan said, according to The Japan Times. “I would like to work well with them to express my creativity.’"

The novel's narrative revolves around a female architect in a near-future Tokyo, where a special tower-skyscraper is being constructed in Shinjuku Park to provide a comfortable environment for prisoners. The theme of artificial intelligence is central to the book.

During the award ceremony, Kudan acknowledged the significant role of artificial intelligence in creating her book, a fact that the jury recognized, opting not to alter their decision despite this revelation. They noted that the AI's contribution was evident in the text itself.

Additionally, Kudan mentioned that her interaction with ChatGPT extends beyond professional collaboration. She often confides in the AI, sharing personal thoughts and finding inspiration from its responses for her novel's dialogues.
