🚘 Navigation, Autopilot, and AR Windows: How AI is Changing Cars

Onboard computers have become an integral part of cars, just as essential as the steering wheel and wheels. However, generative AI is a relatively new element in automotive software. It has already "replaced" windows, navigation, and even the driver, turning the car into a smart assistant.

What AI has already replaced in cars:

🏠 Instead of navigation — a chatbot. Using LLM, Google has enabled the search for interesting places directly in Google Maps. By asking questions to the chatbot, drivers can receive recommendations, routes, and engage in a "natural" dialogue.

👌 Instead of voice control — ChatGPT. Volkswagen has integrated ChatGPT into its IDA assistant, which not only responds better to voice but also supports conversation. Drivers can ask questions and receive answers while driving without using their hands.

⚙️ Instead of the driver — Tesla's "pilot." At the end of 2023, the new version of Full Self-Driving (FSD) v12 was released, marking a significant step in autonomous driving. This end-to-end AI is trained on millions of video clips and replaces more than 300,000 lines of explicit C++ code. Now, AI is responsible not only for vision but also for Tesla car reactions. According to Elon Musk, Tesla is closer than ever to creating a fully autonomous vehicle with "baby AGI" inside.

🔍 Instead of windows — smart screens. In Taiwan, AR technology has been developed that turns windows into smart screens with augmented reality (AR). These windows have cameras that track eye movement, and the glass surface is covered with a transparent touch panel with microLED. Using GPS to determine the current speed and geographic location, AI can identify which object a person is looking at. As a result, a photo of this object appears directly on the window. And if you touch the photo, a textual description will appear next to it.
