👍 "AI is a New Digital Species"
📱 Microsoft AI Executive Director Mustafa Suleyman delivered a talk in April at the TED anniversary conference titled "What is AI Anyway?"
Here are his key points:
1. AI should be viewed as a new digital species, not just a tool. They can communicate in human languages and have memory, creativity, and autonomy.
2. Over time, AI will become even better, resembling an all-knowing oracle that will help us solve grand scientific challenges.
3. If someone reads books 24 hours a day for their entire life, they will consume eight billion words. Today, the most advanced AIs consume more than eight trillion words in a single month of training.
4. Attitudes towards AI have changed dramatically in the last 15 years. As Suleyman detailed in his book, AI development is happening at an incredible pace, surpassing all previous technological revolutions.
5. Every organization, city, and object will have its unique AI representation.
6. Personalized AI assistants with vast knowledge will become our digital companions throughout our lives. They will perform a wide range of tasks, from the mundane to the global, actively interacting with each other and with people.
7. The development of AI reflects the entire history of humanity, not something external. Our task is to embed in it the best of what exists in people: empathy, kindness, curiosity, and creativity.
8. The potential benefits of AI for healthcare, education, and solving global problems are enormous but require a careful approach.
9. To avoid existential risk, we should prevent autonomy, recursive self-improvement, and self-replication.
