😋 How Much Energy is Needed to "Feed" AI
Bloomberg published an investigation into the energy consumption of AI data centers worldwide. Sam Altman's predictions have been confirmed: the development of AI indeed requires a colossal amount of energy, possibly even nuclear, and places for its storage. Interestingly, the startup Oklo, which is building its nuclear power plant for AI needs, is currently valued at $850 million. Altman, who has invested his funds in this company, has high hopes for it.
Figure of the Day
More than 7,000 data centers have been built or are in various stages of development worldwide, compared to 3,600 in 2015.
At the current growth rate, some new artificial intelligence servers will soon consume more than 85 terawatt-hours of electricity annually (the energy produced by more than two nuclear power plants).
⚡ Key Findings of the Investigation
☀ One modern AI data center consumes as much energy as is required for 30,000 homes in the United States.
☀ The energy consumption of data centers already exceeds available power supplies in many parts of the world. This leads to companies waiting years for access to the power grid, outages, and rising electricity prices in some markets.
☀ In some countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Ireland, and Malaysia, the energy required to operate all their data centers, including those planned for construction, exceeds the available renewable energy reserves.
☀ In the UK, energy consumption by AI data centers will increase by 500% over the next decade. In the US, data centers will use 8% of total electricity by 2030.
☀ Today, AI data centers consume 508 terawatt-hours of electricity annually. This is more than the annual electricity production of Italy or Australia. Diagram 🔼
☀ Only 16 countries, including the US and China, consume more electricity than all AI data centers combined.
☀ By 2034, global energy consumption by data centers will exceed 1,580 terawatt-hours, comparable to the current consumption of India, which has a population of over 1.4 billion people.
