📱 An 8-hour (!) interview with Elon Musk

Last week, Elon Musk and the Neuralink team did an eight-hour interview with Lex Fridman — the longest in this video podcast’s history. The interviewees also included Neuralink co-founder and vice president Dongjin (DJ) Seo, Neuralink's chief neurosurgeon Matthew McDougall, neurophysiologist and brain interface software lead Bliss Chapman, and Noland Arbo, the world's first person with a Neuralink chip implanted in their brain.

Highlights (from Musk's interview)

❗️ Neuralink recently implanted its device in a second patient paralyzed after a spinal cord injury while diving. By the end of the year, Neuralink aims to have ten total human participants.

❗️ Within the next year or two, a person with a Neuralink implant will be able to outperform a pro gamer. The long-term goal of Neuralink is to improve human-AI interaction by increasing communication bandwidth and achieving speeds of up to 1 Mbps within five years, times faster than normal speech or typing.

❗️ Neuralink’s second product is called Blindsight. It aims to enable people who are completely blind, have lost both eyes or an optic nerve to see by directly triggering the neurons in the visual cortex.

❗️ You’re actually already a cyborg. You have this tertiary compute layer, which is in the form of your computer with all the applications or your compute devices.

❗️ You’ve got eight billion humans; each human is machine-augmented via their computers. So, even with AGI, competing with eight billion machine-augmented humans is a much higher bar.

❗️ If our limbic system provides a source of will to do something that then goes through our cortex to our tertiary compute layer, then it might be that the AI, in a benign scenario, is simply trying to make the human limbic system happy.

❗️ At a certain point, AI will be smarter than all humans combined. But even with super-intelligent AI, humans may still provide value as a "source of will."

❗️ It’s the mission of Grok to understand the universe. Grok 3 will likely be available by the end of this year.

❗️ It’s humbling to see how little data humans have actually been able to accumulate. Optimus robot is going to be the biggest source of data.

❗️ The goal of SpaceX is to establish a self-sustaining city on Mars. Mars is the only viable planet for such a thing. The Moon lacks resources and is vulnerable to any calamity that takes out Earth.

❗️ Civilizations go through a life cycle. No empire will last forever. If civilization does not at least maintain its numbers, it will disappear.
