🍄 Edible/Non-Edible: Going Mushroom Picking with AI
In childhood, many of us went mushroom picking with our grandparents. They explained to us why it’s normal for the stem of an aspen mushroom to turn blue, while it's dangerous for a white mushroom. Today, AI joins these wise advisors.
Picture Mushroom is a mobile app with over 1 million downloads on the Play Store. It allows you to identify the species of a mushroom and whether it is edible based on a photo.
⚠️ The app's creators warn: “No algorithm can guarantee 100% accuracy, so if in doubt, it’s better to refrain from consuming or touching the mushroom.”
🍄 How to Use Picture Mushroom
To identify a mushroom species, take three photos: from the side, above, and below. You can also upload previously taken photos from your gallery. The computer vision algorithm will analyze matches with the database it was trained on and provide an answer in a wiki article. This will include:
⚫️ The name of the mushroom, including its common name;
⚫️ Edible/Non-Edible status and the level of danger in case of a poisonous mushroom;
⚫️ Whether it has a specific smell;
⚫️ The seasons when the population of this species peaks;
⚫️ Its geographical distribution.
If Picture Mushroom is unsure, it will provide several options ranked by probability.
🍄 To improve accuracy, you can allow the app access to your geolocation. This will enable you to save the locations of your finds on a map. The “Mushrooms Near You” feature will help you find mushroom spots and learn about the diversity of mushrooms in your region.
If you don’t have a photo of the mushroom, you can search the built-in encyclopedia by its common name, such as "chanterelle" or "porcini."
All queries and photos can be saved in a personal account, creating mushroom collections.
🍄 Picture Mushroom supports 11 languages, including Russian. The paid version offers an expanded mushroom encyclopedia and consultations with specialists.
You can download the app for Android and iOS.
Would you trust AI for mushroom testing?
❤️ — Yes, I believe in technology
😈 — Only if someone tries the mushroom first
