💪 Elon Musk’s AI Supercomputer
Elon Musk revealed the Cortex AI supercomputer, which is nearing completion at Giga Texas, Tesla's headquarters in Texas.
💡 Idea
Musk calls this project “the giant new AI training supercluster being built at Tesla HQ in Austin to solve real-world AI.”
It is indeed one of the world's most powerful AI training clusters. The supercomputer will train the next version of Grok AI, Tesla's Full Self Driving autopilot system, and Optimus robots. A massive cooling facility is already in construction next to the Cortex AI.
🔋 Capacity
Cortex AI will run on 50,000 Nvidia H100 chips, with a future capacity expected to add 300,000 B200 GPUs next year. Nvidia’s B200 chip is considered the world’s most powerful AI chip, with one processor costing as much as $40,000. These chips train AI not only using written data files but also on large datasets of videos.
The facility will run 70,000 AI servers, consuming 130 MW and up to 500 MW of energy in two years.
⚡️ Musk’s team has also just launched another giant cluster for xAI, Project Colossus in Memphis, which he dubbed a “gigafactory of compute”. The cluster is powered by 100,000 H100 chips from Nvidia and needs 5 million liters of water to cool it daily. Colossus took only 122 days to build from start to finish.
Musk also recently announced a $500 million investment in the Dojo supercomputer in Buffalo, home to another giant Tesla factory.
