🤔 Quantum Computing: A New Era Unfolding?

Theoretical physicist Dr. Michio Kaku, a popularizer of science and best-selling author, firmly believes that the quantum revolution is coming and will change the world beyond imagination. Quantum computers will help eradicate cancer and solve the problem of aging, he said.

This spring, Google has announced a three-year international competition with a $5 million budget to develop quantum computing algorithms that can help solve real-world challenges.

Let's find out what quantum computers are and where they can be helpful.

⚙️ The Сoncept

Conventional computers use bits to store and process information in 0 and 1. Quantum machines use qubits that can be in superposition (i.e., in several states simultaneously, representing numerous possible combinations of 1 and 0). It makes it possible to store more data and process it much faster.

MIT researchers created the first quantum computer in the late 1990s.

▶️ Major Players

In 2019, Google's Quantum AI lab introduced the Sycamore quantum computer. It performed the calculations that the most powerful supercomputer would take 10,000 years to finish.

Amazon, Microsoft, Intel, and Alibaba are actively developing quantum systems.

💸 The quantum technology market will exceed $1 billion in 2024, with Germany planning to invest more than $3 billion by 2026 and France $2 billion. They will train at least 5,000 specialists, creating 30,000 jobs. The US will allocate $1.2 billion for quantum research.

Real-Life Uses

➡️ Finding new materials and drugs

➡️ Training generative AI

➡️ Unmanned transportation

➡️ Renewable energy development

➡️ Theoretical physics, including black holes' exploration.
