OpenAI published an article in which professional writers shared their experience working with AI.
1️⃣ Wordfinding
Choosing the right word can significantly impact the quality of writing. Former New York Times columnist Farhad Manjoo uses ChatGPT for “wordfinding,” which helps him articulate ideas better. AI helps discover precise expressions, analogies, and metaphors that enhance the text.
Before ChatGPT, I’d look at dictionaries and thesauruses and go on wild-goose Google searches for the perfect word.
2️⃣ Editorial Feedback
Writers often find it hard to remain objective due to the solitary nature of writing. ChatGPT becomes a valuable tool for instant feedback, helping authors improve their narrative. Screenwriter David Cornue emphasizes that he uses ChatGPT not as a content generator but as a collaborative partner while maintaining his unique voice.
I use ChatGPT all day, every day. For me, it’s like a writers’ room.
3️⃣ Reverse Interviewing
Writer Stew Fortier employs a technique he calls “reverse interviewing,” where ChatGPT asks him questions, helping him bring his ideas and thoughts to the surface. This method allows writers to articulate their ideas more clearly.
AI can be a non-judgmental collaborator that helps pull out valuable and unique insights from you.
4️⃣ Comedy Writing
Comedy writer Sarah Rose Siskind uses ChatGPT to research joke setups and themes, allowing her to focus on crafting punchlines. By working with AI, she explores various comedic angles and gathers material to improve her writing.
It won’t give me a finished joke, but it will start the conversation.
5️⃣ Research and Worldbuilding
Research is one of the most time-consuming stages of writing. Novelist Elle Griffin explains how ChatGPT speeds up this process by providing immediate answers to specific questions, allowing her to focus on creativity rather than getting lost in endless research.
I always ask ChatGPT to include links to sources so I can make sure the information is accurate.
