🎤 "A lot of people were afraid of the personal computer when it first came out," — Ashton Kutcher at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024

Hollywood actor Ashton Kutcher, Sam Altman’s longtime friend and one of the biggest investors in artificial intelligence, spoke at the recent TechCrunch Disrupt.

Kutcher is a co-founder of California-based venture capital firm Sound Ventures. The company started a $265 million AI fund last year and has been actively investing in AI startups, including OpenAI, Stability AI, Anthropic, World Labs, and Hugging Face.

The fund also recently invested in developing an AI gadget that Apple’s legendary designer Johnny Ive and Sam Altman have been working on together.

Highlights

🔴 There will not be a company in the world that is not, in some way, shape, or form, using AI in the future. So, every company is going to be an AI company. Foundation-layer AI companies are going to be some of the most valuable companies that have ever been created in the history of humankind.

🔴 We invest in a variety of startups, often competitors. Sometimes, you think that you can pick the winner, but there might not be a winner or a monopoly because many different people stand to gain a lot from AI and AGI. I truly believe that the achievement of AGI will benefit all of humanity.

🔴 I think a lot of people were afraid of the personal computer when it first came out, and many were afraid of the car when it first came out and of the industrial world revolution when it happened. Now everybody goes: AI is going to take this or take that. I don’t think it takes anything. AI doesn’t negate your talent or your own skill — it actually just optimizes it. With this next level of innovation, I think we’re all going to be capable of doing much more than we’ve been capable of doing historically.

🔴 When most people get to a road with a fork, they think: "I can go left, or I can go right." Extraordinary founders have this sense that you can go up and then go whichever direction you want.
