📝 Ilya Sutskever: "Data is the Fossil Fuel for AI"

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former Chief Scientist of OpenAI, made his first public appearance since leaving the company and spoke at NeurIPS—the leading conference on neural networks and AI.

Highlights:

➡️ We've reached peak data. The industry is running out training data. This will force a shift away from the current method of training models. Sutskever compares data to fossil fuels: just as oil is a finite resource, the internet contains a limited amount of human-created content.

➡️ Next-generation models will be agent-based. Sutskever defines an AI agent as an autonomous system that performs tasks, makes decisions, and interacts with software independently.

➡️ The AI of the future will be capable of reasoning. Unlike current AI, which primarily matches patterns based on what the model has seen before, future systems will be able to process queries step-by-step in a way resembling human thought.

➡️ The more a system reasons, the more unpredictable it becomes. Sutskever compared reasoning systems to advanced AI in chess, which are truly unpredictable even for the best chess players.

➡️ Scaling AI systems is similar to the evolution of brain size. Just as human ancestors followed a different path (brain weight decreased relative to body mass), AI will discover new approaches to scaling beyond today's conventional pretraining methods.
