🖥 Lisa Su: "AI is only in its very, very beginning stage"

Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, has recently been named Time magazine's CEO of the year. During 12 years of her leadership she brought the company out of its worst crisis making AMD one of the world's leading designers of the CPU chips that power both personal computers and data centers. 

Who is Lisa Su?

➡️ Su was born in Taiwan in 1969. At the age of three, she moved with her parents to New York. As a child, she was interested in programming. She earned her doctorate in electrical engineering from MIT.

➡️ In 2014, she took over AMD at a challenging time: the company was heavily in debt, and its stock cost just around $3. Under Su's leadership, AMD's stock trading price increased nearly 50-fold. The company's valuation has also surpassed its main competitor in the CPU market—Intel. This fall, Harvard Business School began teaching Su's leadership of AMD as a case study.

➡️ Unveiled in the fall of 2024, El Capitan, the world's most powerful supercomputer with a performance of more than 2 exaflops, consists of 44,000 AMD chips. Su said it is the most complex thing her company has ever built.

➡️ Su holds meetings on weekends, and when prototype chips are delivered from the factory, she personally goes to the lab to help inspect them.

➡️ Lisa Su is the distant cousin of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

Lisa Su on computers and AI:

🛑 Artificial intelligence is the most important technology that has emerged in the last 50 years. It will help solve some of the world's hardest problems and accelerate the rate and pace of medical discovery, diagnosis and treatment.

🛑 AMD doesn't do chips for phones and tablets because it focuses on the underlying technology. "Big computers were not sexy 10 years ago, but they're kind of sexy now," jokes Su.

🛑 Whatever you think you're doing today that seems amazing, it's going to be 10 times more amazing even 12 months from now because we're at the very early part of the learning curve with AI. This is a five to ten year cycle, and we're at the very beginning of it, with very exciting times ahead.
