📸 AImagine: AI Photography Exhibition Opens in Brussels
Who's afraid of artificial intelligence? Photographers, perhaps—but not all of them, says Michel Poivert, curator of the Almagine exhibition, which is part of the 9th PhotoBrussels Festival. Each item in the exhibition reinterprets or reconstructs historical imagery with AI.
The exhibition's style is diverse ⤴️ You'll find both expected surrealistic visuals and images that could easily be mistaken for real photographs.
Some photographers used AI to enhance their shots, while others generated their works entirely. For example, Alexey Yurenev trained a model on a 35,000 World War II photographs dataset and created an entire Silent Hero series.
Michel Poivert suggests viewing AI as a tool for photographers rather than a replacement—photography remains the foundation for AI.
"The photorealistic quality of AI-generated images serves as a reminder that visual data production is fed by photographs stored in digital memories. Even if they no longer take pictures themselves, photographers can still create using the entities held in reserve," he explains.
You can find more works in the Guardian's feature.
