Our world is designed exclusively for humans: buildings are full of stairs and doors, warehouses have shelves at shoulder height, and so on. That's why robots with a human-like physique are considered the key to a new revolution in production automation, according to experts.
Digit robots, developed by the startup Agility Robotics, have become the first "cyber-employees" of the logistics company GXO Logistics. Digit's task is to carefully transfer containers with goods onto a conveyor belt. Soon, Digit is expected to serve as an intermediary between simple conveyor machines and humans performing a wide range of tasks, according to the robot creators.
The key advantage of androids is their ability to perform multiple tasks.
"In the future, we could have Digit unloading a trailer in the morning, picking goods in the afternoon, and loading trucks in the evening," says Adrian Stoch, chief automation officer of GXO Logistics.
The starting point for widespread adoption of robots will be cost reduction, notes Agility Robotics.
Another turning point will be the development of a universal robot brain. Companies like Nvidia are stepping into this space by creating software that trains robots using simulations of real-world environments. A breakthrough in robotics—similar to what ChatGPT has been for AI—just around the corner, believes Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
