🍷 Will Robots Replace Waiters, Bartenders, and Baristas?
Since the pandemic, many cafes and restaurants worldwide have reported staff shortages. In the U.S., over 80% of food service businesses are actively hiring, 30% lack bartenders, and almost half lack chefs, cooks, and dishwashers.
The American company Richtech Robotics, which specializes in developing AI-powered robots for a wide range of industries—from healthcare to entertainment—helps solve problems in the public catering sector.
One of the company's "employees" are Adam and Scorpion, who could work as baristas, bartenders, mixologists, and wine or tea sommeliers. These robots, powered with Nvidia chips and AI cameras, can navigate spaces, recognize customers' faces and gestures, and speak multiple languages. The company's robots are already serving customers in coffee shops and stores in Las Vegas and New York City, as well as in 20 restaurants located in Walmart shopping centers. In the next few years, the company plans to deploy over 500 of these robots to coffee shops and bars across America.
However, despite their remarkable capabilities, robots lack human emotions—they cannot genuinely wish someone a good day, recommend a dish based on their personal preference, or engage in heartfelt conversations at the bar.
Richtech Robotics president Matthew Casella doesn't share these concerns. He insists that robots are not meant to replace people in the service sector—they will only make their jobs easier. They will allow the staff to communicate more with guests and create a welcoming atmosphere, as he believes hospitality is built on special experiences that make you feel well-taken care of.
"Does a server need to go back and forth between the kitchen 20 times a meal when a robot can handle that? The future server, waiter, waitress needn't perform tedious drudgery like clearing tables and fetching waters. Robots can do these tasks, enabling humans to focus on the people connection," says Matthew Cassella.
