👆 Mathematician John Lennox—AI is Changing Children's Perception of the World

John Lennox, a professor of mathematics at Oxford University, holds a doctorate from Cambridge, and is the author of over 70 scientific papers and several books, including God and Stephen Hawking and 2084: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity.

Lennox is a devout Christian and has debated well-known atheists, including Richard Dawkins, from a religious perspective.

In a new interview, he shared why AI is beneficial and dangerous and what ethical challenges its development presents to humanity.

Highlights:

➡️ AI exacerbates the negative impact of technology on children's development. Children spend up to 9 hours a day on gadgets—researchers suggest that such a lifestyle can literally alter the structure of their brains. AI algorithms amplify digital addiction and make inappropriate content more accessible to children. Lennox considers this one of the most serious issues facing modern society.

➡️ At the same time, Lennox acknowledges the benefits of AI. He admires medical breakthroughs made possible by technologies like AlphaFold and AI systems that assist doctors. Technology should not replace humans but can support them. He compares it to glasses: "That is an enhancement to my vision. But what that isn't doing is respecifying what it means to be a human," the scientist explains.

➡️ We still don't understand what consciousness is, Lennox points out. In his opinion, this is the main obstacle to creating "strong AI." Here, he indirectly agrees with one of AI's pioneers, Yann LeCun from Meta.

➡️ The terms "machine learning" and "artificial intelligence" attribute human qualities to computers that they do not possess. Lennox reminds us that the word "artificial" in "AI" means imitation, not actual intelligence. This linguistic confusion makes it harder to accurately assess the capabilities and limitations of these technologies.

➡️ Most people are unaware of the scale of the hidden data-trading market. Even a simple online purchase triggers a process of collecting and selling information about you to third parties. This system raises serious ethical concerns, as users give formal consent without understanding its real consequences.
