🏥 China Is Building the First Fully AI-Powered Hospital
Tsinghua University's Institute for AI Industry Research has launched a hospital project that would use AI agents to support doctors. MedAgent-Zero, an AI trained in a simulated hospital environment, is at the heart of the system.
The virtual clinic closely replicates a real one: it has 32 departments, and AI nurses assist doctors.
AI agents treated virtual patients created by language models and learned from mistakes. Researchers tested various OpenAI models—GPT-3.5, 4, 4o, and o1-preview—to train the AI doctors.
Digital doctors treated over 400,000 patients during training, which would have taken human doctors years to complete.
The trained AI agent selected the proper diagnostic strategy in 98.8% of cases and produced the correct diagnosis in 95.3% of cases. Additionally, MedAgent-Zero, based on o1-preview, earned 96% on the MedQA benchmark, which includes questions from US medical licensing exams. Human candidates normally require approximately 60% correct answers to pass.
The creators plan to test the system in real ophthalmology, radiology, and pulmonology departments in a Beijing hospital.
