☣️ An Apocalypse Like The Last of Us Due to Climate Change?
Global warming could trigger outbreaks of fungal infections in Europe as dangerous fungi expand their habitat northward, according to a new study by scientists from the University of Manchester.
🍄 Who is Threatening Us?
The fungus Aspergillus flavus is well-known to farmers—it infects grain crops and contaminates food with mycotoxins. However, inhaling its spores can also lead to dangerous infections.
According to the study, if the world continues to rely on fossil fuels, the range of A. flavus in Europe could expand by 16% within 15 years, putting over a million more people at risk of infection. This fungus is highly heat-resistant: it survives and thrives in hot and humid conditions where other fungi typically perish.
Another dangerous species, Aspergillus fumigatus, could increase its range by 77.5%, threatening the health of 9 million people in Europe. Spreading through the air, this fungus causes deadly infections in individuals with weakened immune systems.
☀️ The Death of Nature's Helpers
Meanwhile, "helpful" saprotrophic fungi, which are responsible for decomposing organic matter, are under threat. In hot regions, especially in Africa, extreme temperatures could prove fatal even for these resilient organisms. As a result, natural decomposition processes may slow down, leading to less fertile soils.
❕ Scientists have studied only about 10% of Earth's estimated 1.5–3.8 million fungal species. This means there may be many "surprises" ahead: new pathogens and disease outbreaks.
Are we heading toward a future like The Last of Us?
❤️ — Yes, it's time to think about ecology!
🤔 — No, just another scare story
