🇨🇳 China Turns Off AI Photo Recognition to Curb Exam Cheating

During the national university entrance exams (gaokao), Chinese tech giants have shut down AI-powered image recognition features nationwide to prevent cheating.

Users on social media report that platforms like DeepSeek, Kimi, and Qwen no longer process uploaded images. According to Bloomberg, the restriction specifically targets photos of test questions. When such images are submitted, chatbots display a warning:

"To ensure the fairness of the college entrance examinations, this function cannot be used during the test period."

👀 At the same time, Chinese authorities are actively deploying AI to fight cheating. As China Daily reports, several provinces are using intelligent surveillance systems that can detect whispering, eye movements, the use of cheat sheets, and other suspicious behaviors — such as answers submitted too quickly or too slowly.

🎓 This year, 13.4 million students are taking the gaokao, which includes three required subjects (Chinese, math, and a foreign language) and three electives.
