🚘 Tesla Launches Robotaxi Service in the U.S.—But So Far It's Invite-Only

On June 22, white Tesla Model Y vehicles marked Robotaxi began operating on the streets of Austin, Texas. The ride-hailing app is currently invite-only and limited to a select group of investors and Tesla enthusiasts.

Each ride costs a symbolic $4.20, regardless of distance. The pilot includes up to 20 vehicles.

🔄 Fully Autonomous?

Tesla's Full Self-Driving system, powered by onboard AI, controls the vehicle. There's no driver behind the wheel, but a safety operator in the front passenger seat monitors the ride with an emergency stop button at hand. They don't control the car and don't interact with passengers.

Before starting, passengers must fasten their seatbelts—only then does the "Start Ride" button appear in the app. During the ride, passengers can use the touchscreen to request a stop or contact a remote operator. Tesla employees monitor each vehicle's movements in real-time.

⛔️ What Are the Limits?

Currently, the robotaxis operate only within a defined zone in South Austin. Routes avoid highways and complex intersections. The service operates from 6:00 a.m. to midnight; however, Tesla may pause operations due to weather conditions.

Tesla joins a growing field of companies testing robotaxis in U.S. cities, including Amazon's Zoox, Cruise, and Waymo, which also operates in Austin. However, unlike its competitors, Tesla doesn't use LiDAR or high-definition maps; instead, it relies solely on standard cameras and neural networks. While the approach may lower costs, some experts still question its safety.
