🧲 Magnetic Microbots Cure Rabbit Sinus Infections

Chinese researchers have developed microscopic robots that clear nasal sinuses by removing pus and bacteria, with no antibiotics involved.

Each microbot is a tiny sphere made of bismuth oxyiodide alloyed with copper atoms, just 3 microns across—smaller than a grain of salt.

Doctors introduce a swarm of these bots into the sinuses along with a fiber-optic cable, then guide them to the infection site using an external magnet. Their movement is tracked in real-time using X-ray imaging ⤴️

Once the bots reach their target, light activates them to begin treatment. The heat they generate breaks down the pus, allowing them to penetrate deep into infected tissue, beyond the reach of standard medications. Meanwhile, generated reactive oxygen species break down bacterial biofilms and kill the bacteria.

The method was initially tested on infected pig tissue, then on live rabbits with induced sinusitis. The treatment cleared the sinuses completely, healed the mucous membranes, and caused no damage to healthy tissue. The bots then naturally exit the body through the nose.

The main advantage of this approach is targeted treatment. Unlike standard drugs that travel through the bloodstream and affect the whole body—often causing side effects—these bots only work where they're needed. Researchers are already testing similar technologies for targeted chemotherapy and minimally invasive brain biopsies.
