🤍 An AI Tattoo Robot Just Started Working in New York
A robot called AERO (Artist Enabled Robotic Operator), developed by Texas-based startup Blackdot, is now working alongside human artists at Bang Bang, one of New York City's most famous tattoo studios.
AERO creates designs using dots just 250 microns in diameter—about the size of a grain of sand. It records the process using a microscope, while an AI system checks the results in real time. This achieves a level of precision no human hand can match.
A built-in laser measures skin thickness, allowing the three-point needle to penetrate only the surface layer, avoiding nerve endings and making the process nearly painless.
Not everyone in the tattoo world is thrilled. Some artists see it as replacing creativity with cold, factory-like production. Additionally, the robot can't consult with clients, adjust for different skin types, and is only suitable for flat areas, such as arms and legs.
"We're not aiming to displace tattoo artists," says Blackdot founder Joel Pennington. He compares the invention to the printing press—people once believed books should only be handwritten.
Pennington says the goal is to give artists a new tool to add fine text and intricate details to their work, and to make tattoos more accessible for people who are put off by the pain.
Would you get a tattoo from a robot?
❤️ — Yes, if it doesn't hurt
🎃 — No, it feels soulless
🤔 — I'm not into tattoos at all!
