🚨 AI Now Answers 911 Calls

In the U.S., Emergency dispatchers rank among the top 10 industries with the highest staff turnover, with more than 25% of employees leaving within a year of starting work.

Aurelian, a Seattle-based startup and Y Combinator graduate, has developed an AI voice assistant to manage non-emergency calls and ease the load on call-center staff who often have to work overtime.

The AI dispatcher answers with zero waiting time. The model recognizes urgent calls and immediately transfers them to a human operator. In less urgent situations, such as complaints about noise, parking violations, or reports of stolen wallets, the system collects information and either creates a report or immediately forwards the details to the police.

The developers claim that AI can handle 74% of non-emergency calls without the involvement of dispatchers, saving them more than three hours a day. However, this does not mean that human 911 call center operators will be replaced entirely.

"911 call-takers are trained to handle emergencies, not parking complaints. Aurelian reduces burnout and helps telecommunicators stay focused on the most critical situations," stresses the startup cofounder Max Keenan.

AI dispatchers are already working in 912 dispatch centers in the states of Washington, Tennessee, and Michigan.
