👐 How Has People's Use of AI Shifted?

By July 2025, ChatGPT was processing 29,000 messages every second. In just one week, 700 million users sent the bot 18 billion requests.

Since its launch, both the audience and the way people use the tool have undergone significant changes. That's the conclusion of a large-scale study of more than a million conversations by OpenAI and the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Highlights:

🔘 At launch, 80% of users were men. Today, women make up more than half of the audience.
🔘 46% of all messages now come from users between 18 and 25.
🔘 30% of prompts are work-related, while 70% are personal. Work tasks are growing, but personal use is growing even faster.
🔘 Over the past year, programming queries dropped from 12% to just 4.2%, as many developers switched to specialized coding tools.
🔘 29% of prompts are about learning, instructions, or brainstorming. Search-style queries jumped from 14% to 24% in just one year.
🔘 Text-related tasks account for 24% of requests. In two-thirds of cases, users ask the bot to improve or translate existing text rather than write something from scratch.
🔘 Role-play and AI companion chats are still a tiny niche—only 0.4% of traffic.
