👨🏫 88% of Students Often Use AI in Their Studies
The proportion of British students using generative AI tools has jumped from 53% last year to 88% in early 2025. These were the findings from the Higher Education Policy Institute's online survey of over 1,000 students.
🟢Two-thirds of the respondents believe that teachers can spot the use of AI. Even so, only 53% are ready to put off using ChatGPT and other similar tools because of the fear of being accused of cheating.
🟢 Every second student is concerned about AI hallucinations appearing in their work—and almost 70% have seen this happen. Every fifth person considers AI tools to be too expensive, and only 18% of students believe they could learn more without AI.
🟢At the same time, only about a third of students noted that their university encourages the use of generative AI in their studies. Still, only 36% report receiving training in AI skills from their institution.
🟢Male students of technical and medical faculties, and people from a better socioeconomic background, use AI more often.
"It is almost unheard of to see changes in behaviour as large as this in just 12 months. Universities should take heed: generative AI is here to stay," warns Josh Freeman, author of the report.
