🪑 A Developer Created a Mini-ChatGPT in Minecraft

Blogger Sammyuri built a massive virtual computer in Minecraft and launched a small language model on it—CraftGPT ⤴️

The AI actually works! It responds to player queries directly within the game. However, the speed leaves much to be desired. While a regular computer completes tasks in seconds, the "machine" in Minecraft takes a couple of hours to generate an answer—even for a simple question.

"The model is very prone to going off-topic, producing grammatically incorrect answers, or just generating nonsense," Sammyuri warns.

The entire system is built using redstone—a special resource in Minecraft that players use to create electronic systems. Sammyuri specifically emphasizes that no simplifying command blocks or mods were used.

Despite its limitations, CraftGPT is a fully functional model with 5 million parameters, trained using Python on an English-language TinyChat dataset.

➡️ The developer has uploaded the project to GitHub, but you'll need at least 32 GB (preferably 64 GB!) of RAM to run the model.
